This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I see that Provenance Fighter Sales (Tony Raftis) is now advertising the ex-Max Chapman, ex-Old Flying Machine Company F4U-4 for sale again, so it looks as if the sale of this machine to Rob Kane in Alaska, for who it was recently repainted, has turned out to be short-lived.
$1.95m

Someone will buy it and paint the green stripes back on it!

Is it as blue as this pic suggests? Is it painted whatever color blue they think is closest?
Why am I pulling my hair out trying to find the proper colors for my race car, when the actual planes themselves are not even the proper colors?
Frustrating...

She don't look any the worse for wear to me....but would SOMEONE please buy her and give her a good home, once and for all? Tired of playing "Guess who owns NX240CA now?"...it's the hot rod of Corsairs, the dash 4, should sell easily.....

My home would be a good home. I have a room for her in my living room.
But who makes these things so darn expensive.
It is an absolute beauty though, worth every penny if you have it.

I quite liked this scheme..........

This is the way it should be painted, back to the way it was as a Korean War Fighter. This is the actual paint scheme from the Korean War where this -4 flew off of the USS Boxer CV-44. I have Black/White film footage while the -4 was on missions and taking off and landing on the Boxer. The film is from the original pilot that flew this -4 when he brought them in one day to the hangar when Norm Lewis owned her. I do like the Green Stripes as well....did you know that we named her the
"Green Monster" during the Corsair Gathering and the T-Shirt from the Corsair Gathering was one of the "Hottest" selling shirts ever. John Muszala and I had more made after the Gathering because we had people asking for the shirt. Still today as well and we may be making another run of them soon.

I know this is kinda picky, but I've painted more than a few custom cars and it amazes me that a guy would spend 2 mil getting something restored and then accept a poor paint job. If the flaws are that bad in photos, I can only guess how bad they are standing next to it.
The prep work wasnt done on this bird, and the prep work is everything...

I wonder if prep work was specifically avoided in this case? Either for cost reasons, or for fear of finding something you didn't want to find....

If you look at the data plate photo, you can see that it was just sloppy workmanship.
Over spray and underspray....
Also, it seems that some areas are not as well covered as others.
Back in the day, there was a guy named Darrel Starberg that ran a car show all over the southwest and for two years, four of my paint jobs were on tour with him. Maybe I just see way too far into the details....

Maybe they were after an "authentic" paint job, overspray and all?
As long as the paint job doesn't slow it down any, I'm more interested that it is mechanically sound.

Why a Goodyear data plate on a Vought built F4U-4?
It must be a bad paint job...it lowered the selling price.

Aren't there quite a few components that are interchangeable between the early and late Corsairs?

Where are you guys seeing bad paint & prep? I saw the plane at Oshkosh when it was fresh out of restoration and it was darned near perfect! The judges apparently thought so too.
