The Mormon Mustang

Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:17 am

Having had a serious case of wanderlust, I took to the road again.

Durango-Silverton, northwards towards WY and ID.

Missed the A-7 at the Montrose, CO airports, since it was too dark for pictures.

Then, the AH-1S (S, I believe) Cobra at the Vernal, UT Courts Building.

The other pictures, from the Museum in Rexburg, ID.

The guy who appears in one of the photos, was very nice and helpful; he is a volunteer at the museum, and he told me his name.... of course, I decided that I would remember it and did not write it down... Sorry I do not remember your name, but you were one cool guy. Thank you for making the visit so pleasant.

Old Yeller "wadn't" there and neither was the other Skyraider; both attending airshows.

Vernal, UT

Rexburg

That appears to be a new/bigger hangar at Rexburg. I was up there on a Fly-fishing trip a couple years ago and saw Mr. Summers out flying his Skyraider. Dad and I stopped in and got the full tour of the (at that time) two hangars. I was able to sit in the Skyraider and Ol Yeller. Pretty neat to be able to stop into a place that is kinda out in the middle of nowhere to see some Warbirds!

Thanks for the pics Tulio!

Hello Tulio,

Looks like a B17E top turret to me.

Wonder why they took the time to dig a hole big enough to bury the sub ?

Is that Frank Borman's P-63?

Maybe they didn't have room to display the whole thing?

It used to be Frank Bormnan's P-63. Now it's John Bagley's.

About 10 years(?) ago the Blue angels performed in Arco - LOL - small town of how many?? the show drew 25,000 each day. I understand they produce a lot of nuclear sub components there?? or am I sadly wrong?

Danny Summers and his AD-5 will be in Wendover 8-26 this year for our annual show

Actually the lab there developed USN nuclear propulsion systems prototypes
and then trained some 40,000 sailors in the operation of those systems,
among other things.

The why's and how's of Hawkbill's sail coming to the desert of Idaho...

"Wonder why they took the time to dig a hole big enough to bury the sub ?"

I can tell you this from the horse's mouth:

The Sub was actually run aground due to a high speed maneouver during foggy weather : )

Yup, the Idaho National Labs are in the area; no show on maps or anything like that.

Desolate place, mostly lots of nothing out there.

Didn't one of the US nuclear subs disappear many years ago? Maybe it just surfaced...

The missing scenes from Close Encounters? : )

Now, this is not aviation related, but is the triple six number, an actual number carried while in Navy Service?
