A Russian Connection

Sat Oct 28, 2006 10:30 am

I got started on some research with Paul and came across this interesting website... it well worth a look for anyone who is interested in salvage ops.

This P-40E was shipped to the UK in 1998 and then (maybe) sold to an American collector

How and where did the Hurricane Z5053 (Z5252) come from?

The largest single resource here is the LEND-LEASE Shipment documents! all in english!

I think you need to get yourself a subscription to 'Classic Wings' ZuluEcho - all these recoveries have been covered in detail!

P-39 (23)

You forgot to include the link

Looks like Z5053 from Archangel, Russia

P-39 44-29xxx is not listed in the registry, possibly 44-29x23 ?(from the code), fantastic condition

Wrong Hurricane, this one is Z5252, not Z5053

http://lend-lease.airforce.ru/english/a ... ane_Z5252/

The P-39 was recovered almost intact, with the pilot still on board, a couple of years back. The identity is 44-2911 - the tactical code '23' is not taken from the last 2 of the USAAF serial.

The P-40E is 41-13570

Mike.. I've started getting CW only recently.. and have no access to the older issues  I suspected as much that these recoveries have been covered in one publication or another but thought adding the info to WIX would help other people (like myself) who use the net to research information.

I'm sure that Dave M2 will be along in a while to remind everyone that back issues are still available for most editions. Just click on the link at the top of this page!

Thanks Mike
OK, so the registry is wrong as Z5252 is listed as being in the UK in 1996 after being restored in Russia !

P-40 is 41-13390

If you read the article that I posted the link to, all will become clear! :)

In 1996 a Hurricane displayed in a Russian Museum as ‘Z5252’ was brought to the UK and purchased by Hugh Taylor. Although initially registered as ‘Z5252’, it was discovered that its true identity was actually Z5053. Its registration has been altered accordingly.

Mike, Anyone.. any information about the guy mentioned in most of these recoveries ... Boris Osetinskij?

The P-39Q-15 pictured is for sale in the UK. PM me for additional information

Just the vastness of Russia leads me to believe many more warbirds lie undiscovered. The same applies to China.

Thanks Mike. Issue 48 for the Hurricane, Issue 49 for the P-39 articles. Various other issues that have news pieces of what is coming out of Russia / and or restorations there. Check out the upcoming magazine for a 109 that has just gone on display. Boris and a few others who are involved with recovery and restoration / rebuild are fortunately good friends of mine
