Why would they fly around so frequently with the canopies open? I can understand why on takeoff and landing, but why on a formation flight at altitude?

They open the canopies for the photo shoot so they can be seen clearly. Those boys love to get "Mo Fame".

Here are some corsair air-to-airs that I took last year if they are of any use to you.
All the best,
Richard

Ok, please tell how you get a complete prop arc, and a clear image without effects of vibration from the camera plane? Nice. I was at the BDR Corsair gathering. It was a well run, small event.

I used 1/25th shutter speed with an image stabilized lens. I could probably have gotten away with a slightly faster shutter speed, but that's what I went with. Any slow and the aircraft movement within the formation would have created blur. On another note, there are gyroscopic stabilized mounts which you can attach to the bottom of your camera which increase the stability of the shot. They run about $2500 though.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Richard

Somebody put a lot of "elbow grease" into polishing #5. You can see the fuselage markings reflected on the wing.

Here is a shot that has the shutter speed 1/45 with Canon 28-135 w/image Stablizer. The engine is being run at over 2000 RPM

I just got two copies in the mail from Mr. Allnutt of the two pics above (the trio of F4U's)...ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR in 8x10 size, sure as hell smokes what I shot out the nose of 'Panchito' that day....but then I was in the nose of her and shooting past engines and through plexi and all....bhut I'm not complaining...
Still, they'll make a HELLUVA addition to my wall warbird collection....Firefly pics on the way in trade as soon as I can get some enlargements made...

Many thanks Mark... and yes, you had a very difficult place to shoot from that day. T'was a wonderful flight though, and I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to be aboard.
Cheers. Richard
PS. Nice shots Mint!
