B-24 Wreckage--Help Identify Mount and Large Wreckage Piece

Tue Nov 07, 2006 11:54 am

Please see the pictures at the following link of a B-24 mount and large piece of wreckage that was located in the wreckage field of the Anthony B-24 that was shot down over Yap Island on August 10, 1944, http://www.missingaircrew.com/yap/mac/10aug1944.asp. We located the wreckage in the water near Yap in September 2006.

Originally we thought this was the ADF mount on the top of a piece of the rear fuselage that was compressed to look like a leading edge. However, it now appears to be a position or recognition light attachment mount and not an ADF mount.

The pictures at the link below show the mount out of the water, in the water, and pictures taken inside the piece of wreckage looking out towards the mount hole.

I'm seeking help to identify the mount and this piece of wreckage. You can clearly see rib supports on the inside the wreckage. The wreckage is large enough for a diver to fit inside. The wreckage is about 10-12 feet in length. Please let me know if anyone can help identify the mount and the position of the mount on a B-24J so we can identify this particular piece of wreckage.

Additional pictures of the B-24 wreckage can be viewed at:http://www.missingaircrew.com/trip/american2/

Once again, please let me know if anyone can help identify the mount and the position of the mount on a B-24J so we can identify this particular piece of wreckage. Please feel free to post a reply of send me an email at: pat@missingaircrew.com

Additional pictures of all the American and Japanese planes we located during our September 2006 search trip can be viewed at the following link:

Hi Pat That sure looks like an ADF loop ant. mount to me. As you see in the photo it is a raised fairing definatly not a reconition light or any other type of light and note the streamline shape to it  .Thanks mike

Does anyone have a picture of an ADF loop mount, other antenna mounts, and position light mounts on a B-24 or a plane with simular mounts?
