Anybody know anything about this wreck?

Sun Nov 12, 2006 9:53 am

I was surfing and came across this. The author of the photos says it's near Gustavus, Alaska. It appears to be a C-47. Anyone else got more information?

That's gotta be one of the roughest landing strips I've ever seen.

They don't call 'em bush planes for no reason.

Going through seial numbers, this could be VC-47 43-48403 but I haven't found a crash record yet.

I e-mail the man who took the photos and he sent me a photo of the tail and it is ANG 0-3403.

OK, maybe this one per Baugher:

This seems to be related.

Here is question:

Are things at point in the Warbird community, in this day and age, that this C-47 would be considered for recovery?

If it were a D-day Veteran, would that sweet'n the deal?

Well, there are currently two DC-3's up for auction right now which the starting bid was $1,000.00. The last time I checked it, there wasn't a single bid on either one. And they're in much better condition than this one pictured in the wreck site. I think it would be a great adventure if someone recovered this wreck, but it would be my guess that it wouldn't happen anytime soon.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The last DC-3/C-47 will be the intact aircraft that landed in the snow on top of Mt Fuji post war.

Where would you find those auctions?

Well, I was wrong about the bids. At least someone is interested in them...

Doing some research. Baugher shows C-47B 43-49404/26665 form 144th ATS (L) as crashed on November 23, 1957. Based on the Alaska Air National Guard C-47 Memorial information on date, location and the photos Identifying the C-47B at the site near Gustavus I think the wreck is C-47B 43-49403/ 26665. According to 1950 AF markings it would be 0-3403. I hope this solves the question of the identification of the wreck.

Any other updates/changes on the id would be welcome.

Regarding one of the C-47's you posted about:

I think this bird might be 42-23399. Which according to JB's website says it served in North Africa starting on May 20, 1943. Then transferred to the 8th AF in Feb 23, 1944.

It's possible that this Gooney could conceivably could be a "D-Day" veteran.

Does "Tinker Bell" need a troopship hangar buddy?
