Hawker Sea Fury to Tempest modification?

Fri Nov 24, 2006 11:43 am

Several years back I read in a magazine where someone in the UK had a Sea Fury & they were modifying it to look like a Tempest V. I guess sort of like the guy who has made a "replica" MB5 from a P-51D. Anyway, the last a remember was that the fiberglass cowl/radiator had been made & was to be fitted. I believe it was to be powered by a RR Griffon. Anyone here know what I'm thinking of & its progress?

I think you're way off the mark with that one, famvburg.

There are a couple of Tempest IIs (Centaurus-powered) under restoration in the UK, as well as Kermit Weeks' Napier Sabre-engined Tempest V.

The only Sea Furies in the UK are - 3 at Yeovilton (FAA Museum, the RN Historic Flight's airworthy one plus a damaged 2-seater in storage for parts) - 1 at Duxford (TFC, under rebuild, halted temporarily), John Bradshaw's G-CBEL (airworthy) at Bournmouth, plus some wreckage with Craig Charleston in Essex.

IIRC

There is some guy recreating a Static Tempest from a Sea Fury Fusleage recovered from Malta and a Tempest Cockpit.. or might be Typhoon

Not being very familiar with the British restoration scene, could this possibly be the project?

I also found an internet reference connecting a Ted Sinclair to the fuselage of Fury FB. MkII WJ244.

I'd love to find out what the UK contingent knows about this project.

TIA

Maybe that's what I'm thinking of. Maybe he's using a Griffon for the static engine? Is he using Sea Fury wings as well?

A friend of mine was seriously contemplating converting a Tempest II to
RR Griffon power. Unfortunately his life was curtailed and his other Tempest II was sold abroad. I cannot think of anyone who has seriously contemplated converting a Sea Fury into a Tempest.
