A WWII B-17 pilot showed me an altimeter this evening, and though I am a pilot, I was unable to answer his question about this altimeter.
He's interested in knowing about it, so I'm gong to the best and fastest source I know...WIX!
It looks like a standard Kollsman Altimeter manufactured by the Square D company. Part # is 3718-05, and the Classification # is 94-27950.
His question revolves around the Kollsman Window and what appear to be two black "bugs" or arrows on the face of the Altimeter. The outer arrow rides along the outter edge of the faceplate, but under the glass. The inner arrow is inside the altimeter numbers and moves in a full circle. The two arrows move when you turn the knob to enter the local barometric pressure, the outer arrow moves at a faster rate than the inner one. There are the standard 3 needles for altitutde depiction, Hundreds of Feet, Thousands of Feet and 10,000 of feet. He wants to know exactly what these inner and outer indicators, black indicators are for.
I didn't have a camera, so I couldn't get a pic to assist.
Any help from WIX'ers would be appreciated!
