I can't seem to find his name on any list of Aces from World War Two. hmmmmm??

Not on any Navy Cross lists either. Shocker, huh?

He has a flight jacket emblazoned with his flying record and has been telling his tales for years in upscale New York circles to those with little to no knowledge of military so that's how it has been perpetuated and inflated over time. Claiming to hold the Navy Cross and be an Air Wing Commander AND an ace AND a Flying Tiger....those four alone have easily accessible records and I haven't seen his name on any of them. Hmmm...

Years ago I was flying for a little charter floatplane operation and our chief pilot passed away quite quickly from leukemia. Naturally word got around fast and a few guys started sniffing around for a job offer. One morning while I was waiting for a charter to show up this guy came in the office wearing his "I'm a pilot." costume and asking if we were looking for a chief pilot. So while we were having coffee and generally bs'sing he allowed that he had flown F-4's in Vietnam with the Air Force (remember now, I'm in Canada). I smelled a rat right away so I feigned awe and said "Man, that must have been high pucker - everyone and his dog (water buffalo?) shooting at you with everything from SAMs to slingshots and there you are roaring around on the deck WITH JUST ONE ENGINE!"

He just kinda smiled and took a drag on his smoke and said "Ya, well, you got used to it."

Busted. And no, we didn't hire him. Where do these guys come from?
