It occured to me recently that in addition to 2007 being the 60th Anniversary year (1947-2007) of the U.S. Air Force as a separate service, that it is also the 100th Anniversary for the Air Force (1907-2007) and its predecessor flying branches associated with the Army (Army Air Forces, Army Air Corps, Army Air Service, etc.).
It seems to to me when the 50th Anniversary took place in 1957 that this was considered a "Golden Anniversary" and was made somewhat of a big deal of at the time.
By the time the USAF celebrated its 25th Anniversary as a separate service in 1972 and the its 50th Anniversary in 1997, it seems that the anniversary themes assocaited with the Air Force's earlier heritage as part of the Army were either largely ignored or just kind of pushed aside.
I know the Air Force is very proud of its heritage going all the way back to WW II and earlier, so it just seems a little surprising to me that this year is all "60th Anniversary" oriented without mention of the 100th Centennial observance (unless I have missed any references).
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
