NASA recovery helicopter

Sun Apr 01, 2007 12:05 pm

Has anyone else heard of the effort to raise helicopter #66 from the ocean? It was the big ol' SH-3D that was around during all of the Apollo missions. What a great thing to display at the NASM.

How did it end up at the bottom of the ocean? Where is it?

It was in a crash years ago, and originally it was thought to be 2,400 feet down, but divers found it in goos shape at only 220 feet, There is a website, but no info on the recovery, or what museum is going to get it.

I'll have to check, but one of our Sikorskey hulks was supposed to have been a Mecury recovery vehicle. We have three in storage for a former naval pilot and newscaster in the Bakersfield area.
