Aerial Visuals Locator – Maryland (for Stephanie)

I completed my updates to the D.C. Locator. You can find it here…
http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/Locator.php?Region=MD

Since Stephanie will be visiting the area this summer I thought the Maryland locals and regular visitors could see if there is anything that should be added or if there are any blanks that could be filled in. Go the extra mile for another WIXer!

Mike

P.S. Can you tell this is a “form letter”? ;-)

P.P.S. As per standard form here is the list of “Need Help” items…

#1: Is there a F-4 and F-86 displayed at Phillips AAF near Aberdeen?

#2: Apparently there is a T-34 displayed on Tipton AAF near Baltimore. Where exactly?

#3: There may be a F-86 displayed in Crisfield. If so where exactly is it?

#4: Apparently there is a Quest Masters Aircraft in Fort Meade. Where exactly are they located?

#5: There may be a FJ Fury displayed in Bethesda. If so where exactly is it?

#6: On Andrews AFB near Camp Springs the following are displayed: F-105, C-140, F6F and F-4. There may also be the following: T-39, F-86, F-100, F-106 and UH-1. Can you confirm? If so were exactly are they?

#7: There may be a F-86 displayed at Hyde Field near Clinton. If so where exactly are they?

#8: Apparently there is a T-33 on display in Cumberland someplace, possibly in a park. Can you confirm? If so where exactly is it?

#9: Apparently there is an AV-8 displayed in Indian Head. If so where exactly is it?

#10: Apparently there is a F-86 displayed in Princeess Anne. If so where exactly is it?

#11: Apparently there is a T-33 displayed in a park in Rockville. If so where exactly is it?

#12: Is there a Maryland Aviation Historical Society in Severna Park. If so where is it?

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

Here are the ones that I know:

#2. Tipton airfield is located just outside of Ft. Meade. There is DEFINITELY a T-34 there in "FLY NAVY" markings at the end of the ramp. I saw the T-34 back in March. Tipton is at the southwest corner of the intersection of Maryland Routes 198 and 32.

#5. The FJ Fury was located in Cabin John Regional Park. However, the Fury was removed and scrapped nearly 20 years ago. There was also a F7U located at Wheaton Regional Park that met the same fate. I received word directly from the park authorities on those airframes.

#11. I believe the T-33 in question may have been the "gate guard" for Montgomery Airpark located in Gaithersburg. This gate guard was removed and given to a VFW or American Legion hall on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Having lived or worked Rockville since 1975, I can assure you that there is no T-33 currently there. It is possible that there may have been a T-33 there back in the early 1970s, but I imagine it was removed and met the same fate of the two other airplanes.

I am changing the wording, however I don't see it using GE, and the images are decent in that area. Where is it in relation to the traffic circle on the south side of 32 at 198?

Was the F7U removed around the same time as the Fury? Just curious. If you know a date, even approximate, I will include it in the public note. This might be useful info to someone.

Nothing like a local for the solid info. Thanks for your help!

Ref: #2 Tipton AAF. It's located at Ft Meade, MD, not Baltimore. The T-34 is on the lower right corner of the left side ramp, or more specifically at:

39.05.14N 76045.56W

Looks like old SAR Pilot has found the T-34.

Also, just up the road on 32 at the northeast intersection of 32 and the Baltimore/Washington Parkway, there is an EC-130A (I believe it has the three-bladed props) and an RF-8 at the National Reconnaisance Museum, which is part of the NSA Campus.

The F7U and FJ Fury were both removed at approximately the same time. As best as I can tell through people's recollections it was no later than the early 1980s. I remember going to Cabin John Park in 1983 and it wasn't there...I certainly would have remembered that.

The T-33 that was the gate guard is now in Pocomoke City, MD.

I don’t wish to sound ungrateful, but you coordinates put me on the runway. My coordinates in the Locator are near the entrance which is really just a guess as to where it is displayed. Is the T-34 displayed on the grass, or perhaps a concrete pad or similar?

Yep. Already have those. They are displayed in the “National Vigilance Park”.

Noted.

Thanks to all!
