Warbird Information Exchange

Back in the 70's thru mid 80's there was a SP2H NEPTUNE that sat over in the drill pit at Ellington AFB. When iI left there was talk of it going somewhere.
Does any one know where it is at now?

Chuck, the last time I saw that Neptune it was sitting at the Southwest Aero Museum ? ( I think that was their name ) The museum was next to the runway at Carswell. The Neptune was right across from the B-36. Don't know where it went when they closed the "museum". The F-100 they had is now on a pole at Lone Star and they also had control of the B-58, also now at Lone Star. The B-36, as we all know, is at now at Pima.

I'll have to check with a couple of the other former museum members, but if I remember correctly, it was a -7. After Doug H. and I spent a year moving it to Fort Worth, we were suddenly faced with such a massive intergrainular corrosion problem in the rear spars, that we elected to halt the reassembly for fear of a spar failure and fuselage collapse. Dayton made the decision that they would assist us in obtaining another Neptune from the boneyard and let us scrap that one out for parts. Politics reared it's ugly head and things went downhill faster than an F-4 with no thrust, leading to the demise of the museum.

Here is a pic of Ellington taken by the 9th TRS in May of 1971 that shows the Neptune sitting direlict on a taxiway just across from the burn pit at Ellington.




Here is an arial photo of the Ellington Burn Pit in 1981 - also notice the F-101 Voodoo and the burned out hulk is a B-57A Canberra.




The B-57A Canberra was 0-21481 and the F-101F Voodoo was 70428 which was written off in a landing accident at Ellington.

I am looking for ANY photos/slides/negatives of the SP-2E, the F-101F, or the B-57A sitting in the Burn Pit at Ellington or in active service. I will gladly pay for them or for their duplication.

Also, any information on the histories of these aircraft would be greatly appreciated!

I know the T-33, BT13 went to the LM plant retirees restoration club. The KC-97 sat at Carswell for years and then dissapeared...presumably scrapped on the spot.

What happened to the F-86 and B-52? and all the stuff in the little museum trailer?

The Buff became beer cans, the 86 ended up with another museum. Most of the stuff in the display trailer went to Love Field to the museum there. The L-450F was going to go to Siccoro until Pratt told them it was going to cost in the area of $50K+ for a new T wheel for the engine.

Isn't the F-111 that was there the one that is in front of the surplus store up by Texarkana ?

The KC-97 was on the north Air Force/Navy apron at Carswell a couple of years ago. The story I was told was that it would be maintained/cosmetically cleaned up for gate guard duty.
