Hi Davey,
Like most of these things, the devil's in the detail. The Spitfire was unarguably more significant and I'd suspect make many more kills than the Huricane overall, as it served throughout W.W.II and beyond, while the Hurricane was on its way out by 1941.

But...

The Hurricane shot down more enemy aircraft than all the other defences combined in the Battle of Britain.


At that point it was critical. It's important to note there were more Hurricanes than any other type in RAF service, and the Hurricane could be repaired easier and quicker both at Squadron level and in the Repair workshops than the Spitfire, but the achievement remains, as you've noted, critical.

The P-40, Wildcat and Hurricane (for instance) stopped the Allies losing the war. Without them, the P-51, Spitfire et al wouldn't have got their moments of glory.
