Advice needed for 27" Hayes Wheels.

I'm working on a set of T6/BT13 Hayes Wheels and would appreciate input and advice regarding the removal and re-installation of the ring inside the rim, against which the brake pads are in friction. There are 8 bolts (removed on the attached pictures, See link below) but is the ring actually press fit?

Hi Jacques,

There's a couple of ways to do it. You can carefully heat the wheel in your oven (caution: do this when wife's at work!) and then pull the drum out by hand. The aluminum will expand more than the steel and will "let go" of the drum. Or, you can fill the drum with dry ice. Once in a blue moon you may need to do both, but the oven usually works best.

If she catches you however, I never told you that!

No, there's aluminum - all the 27" ones I've seen on BT's and Stearmans are anyway, and even if they weren't you don't have to heat them THAT much.

Use a welder, mig or tig and put about 7 or 8 vert lines on it, then 2 guys wirh flat blade screwdriver can pry it out in no time. I did it on my SNJ when I put disk brakes on.

That destroys the drum though, besides being hard on the wheel. If the drum is in good shape take very good care of it. I paid a not small sum of money for two new drums for my BT a couple of years ago.

While you have the drum out take a very good look at the wheel for cracks. Interestingly, if you gently tap the wheel with a wrench while it's sitting on the floor upright, it will ring like a bell. If it's cracked anywhere though it just makes a dull kinda "thunk" noise.

I think I'll go for the Microwave then :wink:
