Identifing WWII Aircraft by Markings and Names

I posted this on RCAF.com, but since there is so little traffic there I thought I would post this on WIX as well.

A friend of mine had a father who was a crew member on Halifaxs and later the Canadian built Lancasters. Fortunately he was a shutter bug and took a number of pictures. I am trying to identify the airframes in his pictures. There is only one picture were I can read a serial number, so mostly all that I have to go on the markings and names painted on the aircraft by their crews.

Is there a list anywhere on the net that provides serial numbers for the names of aircraft? For example I would like to find the serial number of a Halifax named "EASY RIDES AT NIGHT" and a lancaster named "Miss Carriage". Are there any books that list this kind of information? If no books or anything on the net, where could I start to do this kind of research myself?

I would also like to be able to look up the serial number of airframes which carried various group codes. For example if I found a picture of an airframe with the marks "AB C" (totally ficticious example here), I would like to be able to come up with a list of serial number of planes that carried this code.

Any tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
