Warbird Information Exchange

Hi Guys,

I am going through my Grandmothers slides, and I came across these pictures from Andrews AFB, taken in 1968, while my Uncle was stationed there, after his return from Vietnam. Anyone know anything about them?

Strange seeing an F-111 roped off. Reminds me of the Good Ol Days when there where Armed gaurds around the B-52s, B-1s and the very rare sighting of a F-117.

My guess is the planes are on display for the Andrews AFB Open House they do every year for the public around the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May. I've been to many of the Open House shows there over the years.

Wow - can you imagine an operational C-124 Globemaster!! (right did I get that right?) that would be a neat sight.

Your comment on the armed guards and the F-117 reminded me of an airshow at NAS Atlanta in 1989 or 1990. The F-117 had just been brought out into the light, and one was scheduled to be at the show.

On friday afternoon, it came in and was immediately taxied into a hangar and the doors closed.

Saturday and Sunday the plane was out on the ramp in front of the hangar, with 6-8 Marines in cammies armed to the teeth standing guard. Wouldn't let you get anywhere close.

Monday, as the plane was preparing to leave, someone on the base wanted a photo taken of the F-117 with a Stearman that had been at the show. The planes were positioned together on the ramp, with no guards anywhere in sight. Those of us working at the base could walk right up to it.

Go figure.

the f-111 was just a pup then..... & had major teething problems for a number of years in 68 & after. the swing wing, & other components on it were all new technology at the time, hence the security
