WWII carrier aircraft storage

In the photo below, I noticed several aircraft in the background hanging from the ceiling of the hanger bay. Was this typical of WWII carrier storage?

I know it was on the first carriers, I'm not sure if that carried over to the Essex Class. I can check a book I have on the Evolution of the Essex Class

I have pictures like that in a couple of books. Thats the way SBD's were normally stored/parked belowdecks.
