I think they were fine until some Anoraks on the internet got involved... Now they probably won't be able to sell it since the provenance has been clouded so. :?

I think it was that way to begin with.
Look at it from the side of a prospective buyer. You've got your shiney new bought SNJ-5 at your first airshow. Mr. Fed comes up says hi and asks to see your paperwork (Believe it or not not all feds are dopes and some may even know the difference between a T-6/SNJ and a Harvard) and says there's a problem with your paperwork.....your airplanes grounded.

That's why you should have a pre-buy inspection performed unless you are an expert on that model of aircraft.
