Battle of Britain Airshow, Duxford, 10/09/2005

With apologies to those who've seen these already over on FP...

Yes, it was grey. Yes, it rained most of the day, often pretty hard. But I really enjoyed this one and I was really impressed with the efforts so many put into putting on a nearly full flying programme despite abysmal conditions.

Shuttleworth's Sea Hurri didn't look like it was going to make it through the weather, so the ever helpful OW volunteer fraternity replaced it with something nearly as old. The aircraft did make it over in the end but then didn't fly - argh!

Star of the static was this Malta Merlin... sadly it didn't get airborne either :(

F-86 doing its bit for global warming...

TFC put up the P-47, P-51C and P-51D - a little subdued compared to previous performances but by now the rain was really coming down so it was no wonder they perhaps took it a little easy.

By the time the Hurricanes were going up the weather was nearing its worst for the day, and the Spitfire/Hurricane duo were often barely visible...

Mark Miller braving the worst of the rain. Sorry Mark, most of us hid under umbrellas at this point!

Have you ever seen a jet that looks more at home...? :D

The 'Hawk' trio...

I've been really chuffed to see so many Harvards displaying this year - they've been really undervalued as a display item I feel.

Sally B was good entertainment in the saturated atmosphere, even on the taxiway where she ran up the engines to a high power setting producing little vortices from both the prop tips and suction off the fuselage. Take off was even more impressive...

Time for the Spitfires... and blimey it's finally just about stopped raining!

Absolutely superb - the noise of the Spits alone was worth the price of the ticket. To see and hear a squadron of Spitfires over a Battle of Britain airfield... priceless.
