USAFM He-111 / 2 111

I received an email from Dan Johnston earlier this afternoon...

Warbirdnerd asked me about the USAF Museum's He-111(CASA2.111), and a quick look over at preserved axis aircraft turned up a photo of it taken by you

When and where did you take this photo? Also do you happen to know the aircraft's current status(I presume it is still under restoration as it wasn't on display Saturday)?

My reply to Dan was...

This photo was taken in July 1995 or July 1996 (I think '96). It was taken in one of the annex hangers while on a guided tour. This was discussed on WIX well over a year ago (maybe longer). I think they originally had the intent to restore it to a He-111 standard (it is actually a CASA 2 111), but I think that was indefinitely postponed and I assume it remains in storage.

So the question is... What is the status of the USAFM Casa 2 111? I seem to remember a dicussion on WIX (maybe even the old board) where it was mentioned that the USAFM wanted to retore the 2 111 as a He-111, but the engines were hard to come by and the project was indefinitely delayed. Does anyone know where this airframe is? What is the status? What is the USAFM's intentions for this 111?

I had heard that there was a convoluted deal on to get a He111 (real one) from europe (Norway?) and restore that instead because they were able to trade the CASA to somebody who wanted to get one flying and thats what delayed things - was in one of the mags a year or so ago so it must be true LOL !
