Jack, " Island in the Sky" is the John Wayne movie where the DC-3 is landed on the Canadian lake with his buddies looking for them.
I know-watched it the other day.
Jimmy Stewart's character was Mr. Honey I don't think he designed the tail , he put forth the fatigue scenario

Actually this film predates the Comet crashes (one of the turboprop Reindeer's flight crew mentions that they'll be getting "pure jets" soon). Supposedly the mockup was built from a Halifax, though it was very well disguised...

I think you're wrong there, Jack. The planes were owned by Stan Kurzet of Covina, CA and based out of Brackett Field. The F8F-2 is the one Ray Dieckman just bought from France, and the P-51D is either N6322T or N5439V. It must be 15 years since I saw the movie, so I don't remember if the 51 was the red/white 22T or the white w/black/yellow trim 39V! A friend of mine in California taped this film for me years ago, but unfortunately I managed to tape over it...

I did some checking and the correct name for the Jimmy Stewart movie is No Highway in the Sky. It was made in 1951. You're correct Chris, the initial Comet I crashes were from Oct. 52 thru May 53.

I think the Sheriff was Paul Fix, a regular in a lot of John Waynes 40s and 50s flix, Rio Grande, Jet Pilot and Fighting SeaBees are all I can think of off hand.

The book by Nevil Shute was recently discussed on the Key forum. To my great surprise the book was written before the ff. of the Comet. Nevil Shute was an aeronautical engineer.

The UK film title, and the book, was No Highway.
Nevil Shute Norway was indeed an aeronautical engineer and one of the founders of Airspeed. He dropped the Norway for his literary career.
His autobiography, "Slide Rule" is well worth reading.
