I don't know where there are the two formats, but there are still aircraft registered "CF-".

Aircraft registered in Canada before January 1 1974 were issued the CF registration. Currently aircraft other than vintage (manufactured prior to Jan 1/57) are required to change to the registration if they are repainted so an aircraft with a CF-XXX registration would now be C-FXXX. Aircraft that are vintage can retain their original CF or if they've been changed to a C number, can apply for the vintage markings.
