Phoenix/Belgrano was a cruiser rather than a battleship though.

I agree about Vengeance, it would have been wonderful. Though I guess the economics of it were just too much.

The USS Phoenix / General Belgrano did indeed survive the attack on Pearl Harbor, but was not a battleship. She was a Brooklyn-class light cruiser.

Hms Vengeance has just arrived in India to be scrapped - following 60 years service with 3 navies (Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and the Brazilian Navy)

Anyway, Vengeance was scrapped two years ago, in 2004. A sad end to a grand old ship.

What happened to the USS Cabot was an absolute shame. It wasn't a problem that there were no takers, it was a problem that the scrapping company that purchased the ship wasn't interested in making any deals.

The group that bought the ship from Spain was a mismanaged group. When they couldn't pay the bills, the ship was seized and auctioned off. Several groups tried to save the Cabot, but all in vain. Because the ship was purchased privately, the U.S. Navy said they couldn't step in.

Eventually the ship, the only surviving CVL and the only World War II-era carrier with its original flight deck (and except for the island, virtually unchanged since World War II), was cut up for scrap. A museum in Texas was able to salvage the island and the CIC. Most of the scrap had not been sold as of 2004. What a waste.

FYI -- I think West Virginia and Maryland were the last of the Pearl Harbor battleships to survive.
