I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to search and review ALL final NTSB / FAA accident reports for T-6/SNJ and P-51 Mustang.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

On your search you can specify different search parameters.

I searched using "North American T-6" and "North American SNJ". You can also try other combinations and get different results.

Date range I used was 1970 through 2008. Interesting that both the T-6 and SNJ only go back to 1983.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but while the subject of accident reports came up, I am also trying to locate one.
I think it happened around 1968-1972 in Fort Collins, Colorado at the Ft. Collins Downtown Airpark. A P-51 took off and just after getting airborne, went in. I have searched the FAA database, but nothing comes up. Thanks in advance for any help.
My brother had just started college here and he remembers it.

Ken Boomhower in N5461V. A banker from Kansas I believe. Has anyone got a photo of this a/c as it looked around the time of accident? Also, any newspaper clippings of the aftermath?

And here is a thread about it.

Same id. different aircraft. None of these photos show N5461V. Thanks anyway.

This topic and forum came up in a Google search today, and I felt a need to respond even though this thread appears to have gone dormant in 2007.

I helped restore N5461V in Hays, KS and Fort Collins, CO in 1971 and 1972. It was owned by Ken Boomhower of Hays, KS, a bank president and Col in the Confederate AF, who also owned a Gruman F4F, an AT-6 Texan, an Army Stearman and part of a 1947 North American Navion (that I just sold last February). My contribution to the restoration was in the form of unskilled labor (paint removal and polishing). At the time I was a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I think I had about 500 hours in it, for which I was poorly paid, but honored to be a part of it. I also got a ride in it, which was well worth all my sweat.

That sweat turned to tears when I was informed of the accident on May 17, 1973. Years ago I did see the accident report in the NTSB DB but I don't think they are supporting records that old on line anymore. When I heard about it, I drove over to Fort Collins and viewed the site. I found a fragment of one of the trim tabs embedded in the dirt and kept it. I called the NTSB investigator in charge to inquire about the remains. Nice guy who told me the wreckage was impounded until the investigation was complete. Their findings were consistent with what I knew about the flying skills of Ken Boomhower, even though unbelievable. They said the probable cause was inadvertent setting of the mixture to idle cut-off following take-off. That was the position of the control after the accident. I knew at the time Boomhower was prone to panic, and loved his P51 so much he died attempting a power-off return to the airport.

I have pictures of this P-51 taken about 3 months before the accident. I noticed someone asked for some in previous posts. Let me know and I will send them. It seems that portions of the hull were re-used for another 51 that is still in service. I'd like to see that aircraft sometime...
