I just thought that I would put this out in case someone might know something about it.
Around 1972-73 we moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. My dad and I took a ride north to a place called Angel Fire, wihich was a ski resort or some other type of resort about 90 miles north of Santa Fe. We were near a small airport up there and there was a Mustang, bare metal finish. The problem was that we couldn't any closer than about 150 yds, so I couldn't make out any N number. There were no other markings that I could see, and the whole plane was natural metal finish. It was sort of weather worn, but looked in very good condition.
We talked to the lady who was behind the counter at the airport and we could not convince her to let us walk out to look at it.
She did tell us a story, don't know if it was true or she was just BS'ing us. She claimed that it belonged to a mercenary who made a landing with some sort of engine problem. He paid for parking for several months and said he would have someone one come in and repair it. According to the lady, this had been several months before our visit and as far as she knew no one had touched the plane.
Never got a chance to go back up to see if I could find some more information. Also didn't have the smart back then to carry a camera, like I do today, with me everywhere I go.
Just thought I would post this and see if someone else had any knowledge of this plane. I realize there is basically no information other than that fact that it was a bare metal P-51 in northern New Mexico, but it is worth a try.
