So how's this look for a Sea Fury?
This was a long time ago. The airplane looks a bit different these days.

But this is a different matter. It was probably not at all authentic, but Jerry's Sea Fury is my all time favourite Fury paint scheme.

Jerry Janes named a lot of his airplanes "Cottonmouth".
I don't know why though.

I remember talking to the owner at the race. The purple was tinted floor wax over the bare metal finish. The sponsor was Incredible Universe (now defunct) and the prize and contingency monies did not work as planned

Answer

Mr Janes is from Louisiana, my fav is the name of the AT-11 he had.
cot·ton·mouth

noun
1.
a large, dangerous semiaquatic pit viper that inhabits lowland swamps and waterways of the southeastern US. When threatening, it opens its mouth wide to display the white interior.

Thanks for the great pics as usual Neal. My least favorite, and one of my most favorite, Sea Furies in one thread! Being an AZ resident I had the pleasure of being able to attend all of the Phoenix 500 events and remember the awful purple wax finish on Chuck Leshe's bird. On the other hand "Cottonmouth" was absolutely gorgeous and I was privileged to see it in the flesh at Chino way back when. Not authentic but the scheme fit the Sea Fury perfectly in my opinion. In fact the only scheme I like better might be the overall red that it is currently being painted in!

I suspect that Louisiana -- with all those snakes and chiggers and stuff -- might make the West Coast of Canada look pretty good. I've always liked Jerry's taste in paint schemes. The original Cottonmouth Mustang has been a favorite since I first saw in Chino 40 years ago.

I met J.J at an airshow with "Cotton Mouth" there, & just asked him, when he was by himself next to it, "Excuse Mr. Janes, But can you please tell me why your Sea Fury is named "Cotton Mouth ?", he looked at me and said " I named it after my GRANDMOTHER (!

) She could be as mean as a cotton mouth snake, if anyone messed with her ! He nodded his head yes Firmly, ( No Laughing, or sarcasm ) and then went on to tell me about how the Sea Fury flew, the engine, ect... Really a quiet, nice guy!!
