Well...we are on display with the Bombers in Santa Fe and several locals have told us about a B-24 buried off the approach end of 15. Supposedly it was buried after the war, having been used as a parts source. Anyone ever heard of this machine? We already have a back hoe lined up ;) just need the cities blessing to start digging.

As much as I hope the story is true, the "there's a buried XYZ at field ABC under runway AA" story seems to have a whole lot of milage behind it and little (from what I've heard) substance.

In fact, if I had a nickel for every time I heard the story, I'd probably have enough money to go dig up a few of those buried warbirds....

There's also the story of all of the parts and pieces buried out at Kingman, AZ. Heard it from many of the locals that lived there after the war when all the bombers were store there after the end of the war. They also said they dug big holes and pushed entire airframes into them and then covered them up. Wouldn't THAT be a treasure hunt  When I asked them WHY no one has dug them up, they all said because of all of the live ordanance that was buried as well and that no one wanted to get "blown up"

I have a friend who lives in Kingman. I went to visit him a couple years ago. In the airport office they have some great pictures of all the aircraft there after the war.

The WW2 control tower is still there, along with a runway light, and a few plaques dedicated to aircrew that died in training accidents at the base.

As a matter of fact, yes, I have heard this story from a local in Santa Fe, back in October 2005.

He told me that he had seen this airplane being buried, when as a kid he used to hang at the Santa Fe Airport.....

Anyone seriously interested, please drop me a PM and I will gladly supply him with your name and telephone number.

Saludos,

Tulio

A serious question has to be asked. How far off the approach end was the burial and has 15 been lengthened since the burial?
