First, LOVE the site. Lots of great inputs--along with some interesting disputes. Since this thread is about P-40s other than AVG (no disrespect), I have a photo request.

Well, I don't know about hero status, but my request involves a pilot who died for his country nonetheless--so he's a hero in my book. I am researching the crash in 1943 of Lt. Theodore Marxson near Dalton, GA. I am curious if anyone has any pictures of P-40E, serial number 40-421? Thanks in advance.

Having been a member of the 23rd TFW Flying Tigers for many years while on active duty, I like the tigers teeth. To be a fanatic about who has them on the plains is obsurbe to me. I know in Active AF policy the 23rd Wing is the only unit currently allowed to wear the teeth, and only because of the AVG history behind them.

I have worked on both A-7D's and A-10A's with teeth and the A7 looked great with the mouth on the bottom of the fuselage being open and having teeth along side.

Saw a photo of one pilot laying inside the intake and two others holding him like they were pulling him out of the tigers teeth.

I like Jack. But if I didn't , I would have an oil painting commissioned, 20'X30' to go in the new Boyington Airport Terminal in Idaho. It would have a giant shark toothed P-40, probably an N , coming at you with a big toothy shark's mouth and the pilot would have the canopy rolled back smiling. It would be of course, (Jack's favorite) former AVG ace Gregory "Pappy" Boyington.
Just to really send Jack's blood pressure boiling, I would go ahead and paint all of Pappy's kills that he surely must have downed while in the AVG. This would be of course one kill flag more than the confirmed documented AVG ace.
Then I would have the picture put on 500 holiday cards sent out to all of Jack's friends and veterans with his name on them.
But I like Jack, so maybe we'll just think about it some more.

Anybody out there in the P-40 world ever heard of Bill Tanner? He was a said P-40 ace as his Texas license plate said so. I think he was in the Pacific. Like him, another pilot is Col. Tom Hanzel, a B-29 command pilot. I grew up with these gentlemen in San Antonio, Texas and never asked any questions.

P-40N-1 42-104730/A29-448 is another that flies without teeth, although she did acquire some that lasted from 2006 until fairly recently. Many of her 75 Squadron RAAF brethren wore nose art based on each aircraft's code letter. There was no evidence that this aircraft ever had any such art but, inspired by that tradition, she has a magpie on the nose...the aboriginal name for magpies being Currawong.
