On the subject of safety gear, what type of helmet does Steve Hinton wear?It looks WW2ish but I'm sure it offers some level of protection between a cap and a modern helmet.Either way I like it.

Just like I always wore a Kevlar helmet when I flew on any Army helicopters, I always wore nomex suits and gloves when I flew on WW2 stuff. Sure, people might sneer at you, but it was worth the piece of mind to me that if I survived a crash, I might not need too many skin grafts afterward.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I wore a Gentex Kevlar helmet and a Nomex flight suit when flying my Stearman nearly 30 years ago. Not in the very beginning, but soon after I got it. If you flip over in a Stearman there is a good chance to hit your head and have fuel pooling right underneath you from the fuel tank in the upper wing. I had a flight suit for passengers as well.

I sometimes get grief off the Harley crowd for wearing protective gear on the bike in the Summer when it's 110deg outside... I just tell them "I'd rather be hot than stupid"
