PV-1 black squares on the wings

What are the black squares on the PV-1 wings?

At those locations are aerodynamic slots in the wing that keep the wing tips from stalling before the rest of the wing.

As to the dark (black) coloring, I don't know, but it seems possible that the slots are protected from icing with pneumatic boots just like the leading edges of the wings and tail.

Mike,

Looking at the two photos you posted above, I am more convinced it is de-icing boots. The top picture shows a wing with no de-icers and the bottom picture shows a wing with de-icers.
