C-47s that keep going, and going, and going...

I just read an article in the 19 July 2004 of Aviation Week. It was titled "Hungry for More" and is about the South African Air Force aircraft needs.

I didn't realize the SAAF still had C-47s in their inventory! Here are a few interesting quotes...

"Replacing the 11 remaining C-47TP turbo-prop-equipped Dakotas is one of the largest modernization programs on the horizon after the trainers, fighters and helos are fielded."

"The C-47TPs are expected to reach the end of their service life in 2012. More than 80% of South Africa's trade is by sea, so being able to patrol shipping lanes is seen as vital."

"Aerial photography to reconnaissance is expected to migrate from the C-47TPs to the new system as well."

Wow, that is impressive!
