Another Warbird Ready for a New Owner!

Been plenty of warbirds changing hands lately. Here's another newly listed. Used to see this plane a ton at Grass Valley/Auburn and Minter! I know it has its presence in NorCal as well.

I absolutely love the little Yaks and the -11 in particular. I was surprised at the asking price though. I did not think the Yak had the kind of desirability that would command such a price. I do hope it finds a good home.

PS - While on the topic, whatever happened to the Wayne Wainwright airplane?

I've never understood why the new-build Yak-3/9/11s aren't more popular. Granted, they don't have the historical provenance of other fighters, but it seems that you can get fighter performance for the fraction of the cost of other fighters. I'm sure there's something obvious I'm not considering ...

This isn't a new-build. It is one of the cache recovered to France from Egypt in the 80s, re-engined with an R-2000

I think provenance must be a huge part of it. They surely do not have the recognition in the USA of many US and western types, and don't seem to get much love at airshows. Russian types just don't seem very well known. If someone was interested in something in that rough price and performance range, they would perhaps opt for a T-6 or T-28, which are much more known and recognized, and have better support programs. If they wanted something cheaper and are ok with obscure they would go with a Yak-52.

I do not believe any of those offer the kind of performance that is provided by an R-2000 powered Yak-11.

Indeed. One is a 180mph aircraft, compared with the R-2000 powered Yak which is capable of twice that speed.

The Yak3 has P-51 performance for perhaps 20% of the purchase cost.

The stock Yak11 is 700hp and outperforms a T-6 by a margin. A number of "new" Yak3s are converted Yak11s.

That's what I was getting at. It's not like it has an obscure powerplant, either.

Mike, thanks for the correction on the history of this particular Yak-11. In looking at the Registry, there appears to be more original Yak-11s than I thought there were.

Built in Chino by Joe Haley, an airline pilot (with professional help). Was polished with silver fabric at the time. Been with the current owner for some years and has come back to the Chino Airshow on occasion.
