I know that Steve Hinton has been wearing a hard helmet for quite some time (many decades). Pictures of him and other pilots wearing a leather one are most likely the infamous Campbell Aero Classic that is a hard interior with a leather exterior to give the appearance of a time period piece.

Infamous? I know I'm a bit out of the loop but I hadn't heard of any issues or controversy around these helmets.

Infamous in a good, positive way. I meant it as a compliment. There are no issues or controversy surrounding Campell's. They are the gold standard amongst most warbird pilots - at least for the single engine fighters.
