Here is a clipping from the base paper at Griffiss AFB, NY that I just came across in my souvenir box. Y'all might find it interesting...

Note the first pilot's name! (Google it!)

The 49th, by the way, is still going strong as a T-38 Squadron at Moody AFB teaching fighter lead-in. The squadron is heading to Columbus AFB, Mississippi in 2007 where it will continuing to perform the same job.

Isn't Paul Lockhart currently an astronaut with the Shuttle program?

Edit: I did a little searching and found out he's no longer with NASA.

Yep -- All three UPT bases (Laughlin, Vance, and Columbus) will each have their own IFF squadron. There will also be squadrons at Randolph and Sheppard.

I'm sure it makes sense from a logistical standpoint, but I would think that it would be a super motivator as well to the undergrads to see those IFF '38s taxiing out with recent upperclassmen manning the front pit; as in, "This could be you!"
