Gathering of Mustangs

Sat Feb 10, 2007 12:41 pm

I was just reading in the current issue of Flight Journal Magazine where the USAF Thunderbirds will be preforming at the Gathering of Mustangs in Ohio this September. An already great event just got greater!

Leave it to the military and jets to ruin a perfectly good airshow.

I signed up to volunteer for the Gathering via their website, but haven't heard anything back. I imagine it's abit early, but I was wondering if any other volunteers had heard back yet. Thanks.

OK...The USAF, USN demo teams are great. "Nuff said".
However, they're NOT the reason we go to an airshow. They could have every jet demo team in the world at an airshow but, if there weren't a SUBSTANTIAL number of WWII aircraft there, we wouldn't go.

Mudge the selective

ps...WHAT Mudge said. :D

Mrs. Mudge the not so selective
(After all, I picked Mudge didn't I? )

I couldn't agree with you more, I think they are more for the people that are not as deep in to aviation as we all are here. But that is just my opinion. That is not meant to take anything away from their amazing talent.

No kidding!

I agree they are amazing, and hot female pilots are that much cooler, but that's not what I want to drive 7 hours to see...

I didn't fly one till I was 24 and didn't own one till I was 36. I guess I'm just a kid at heart.

I can't say that jets are for kids as there are many of them I love, I am more talking about the demonstration teams.

I agree with Mudge on the formation team thing.

I go to airshows in the hopes to see warbirds and rare vintage airplanes; not military performance teams. Let alone simple jet fighter demonstrations.

On that note, the local "Biggest Airshow" Abbotsford Airshow, is all that. Jets, jets, and 3 warbirds maybe. In the 1980's it was kinda exciting because the US military had all their cool machines out and the Russians had theirs, and there were also warbirds. The Abbotsford Airshow was actually the debut international site for the Stealth Fighter. Pretty neat... the first time I saw it. But, at the same airshow there was a B-17, a Lancaster, Spit, Hurricane, Sea Fury, etc. Nowadays it seems that the only warbird representation is from my air museum (CMF) and maybe a couple Nanchangs.

I wish they'd change the show to attract more of the warbirds, but they seem to have it so good with military aircraft. Problem is, the Abbotsford Airshow is a show you only need to see once a decade because nothing really changes year to year.

Sigh, I'm going to try and work with the people at Alpha Aviation to put together a good "warbird oriented" airshow at Boundary Bay, BC. Let me know if anyone wants to bring their birds.

Cheers,

David

Having experienced 27,000 lbs of thrust and 44,000 lbs/hr fuel flows per engine from an F-15, say what you want, but I still get a chill seeing and hearing afterburners kick in.
I like them all, old and new, radials, V-12's, jet engines with AB's and without AB's.
The Thunderbirds put on an excellent show and have the potential to draw more people to see the airshow and the old warbirds as well.
Can't wait to hear the afterburners and Merlins !!
