Famous owners of warbirds

Mon Jul 30, 2007 4:50 pm

I remember David Gilmore of Pink Floyd owning several vintage airplanes. Does anyone know if his collection included any spitfires? Also Russ Francis of the SF 49ers owned a Seafury and a Mustang, wonder if he still owns anything today? ... lets see, who else? ... Tom Cruise, I believe, owns two Mustangs now. Cliff Robertson used to own a spitfire. Now I hear John Travolta is buying a Mustang. Anyone know if Cruise is planning to appear at the Mustang Gathering?

Mark the starstruck ... lolol

Depends on your definition of "famous"... Stephen Grey is *famous* because he owns warbirds... whereas in my mind some guy who kicks a ball around a large lawn isn't *famous*, he's just a footballer..
Gilmour never had a Spit, Cruise has one Mustang, not 2 & it is listed for the Gathering.. altho who the pilot will be is unknown...My money says it wouldn't be Tom...

Yep! it does depend on that definition of "famous".... I knew I was going to get that answer .... I know there's a lot of famous people in the warbird world, but I guess I was looking for names of folks that I could say .. wow! ... I didn't know he or she owned a warbird. ... just wondering ...

I have run into Aaron Tippin and Michael Dorn around the Warbird world. Both own and fly warbirds.

Does Treat Williams still have his T-6?

That's right ... Michael Dorn owns and flies an F-86 Sabre jet that he acquired from the South African Air Force. He flies out of Van Nuys Airport in Van Nuys, CA

There was some hype on the boards not too long ago that Cruise had indeed purchased a second Mustang. Was this ever confirmed or denied by anyone in the know? Of course he has also apparently agreed to sponsor the CAF F-82 should the ownership issue be settled in the CAF's favor at some point. Also, I believe Dorn sold off the F-86 quite some time ago, though he may own other vintage jets. Had not heard the Travolta/Mustang rumour, interesting.

Treat sold his plane recently through Courtesy Aircraft Sales.

Aaron Tippin at one time had a T-28, Stearman and Cub. His Stearman was featured in one of his videos not long ago.

English Pop Star Gary Neuman owned a Harvard. Don't know if he still does.
As far as famous goes, do astronauts count? Borman & Anders both own or owned warbirds. Roy Clark and Jimmy Buffet: Stearmans, Footballer Russ Francis had a P-51.

Steve McQueen also had a Stearman. I restored the fuselage for the new owner last year.
