Warbird Information Exchange

Hi!

Am I the only one that has noticed that the prestigous Warbird guys (bombers and fighters) always get more attention than the small ones?

I don't mind it, but sometimes I do feel like no one's giving a darn about my wee trainer.

What do you think?

I think that it might just be that there is an abundance of trainers. When people think of warbirds, they think more on the side of the planes that did the actual fighting, not the trainers. I'm sure we all know the importance of the trainer though.

Well, I don't think attention isn't as important. What really matters is enthusiasm. If you like your avocation then don't worry about the why Joe Millionaire is getting so much attention.

Anyway, if I were rich, I'd rather have a Zero! 3 cheers for a Zero.

Oh, I'm very happy with my German aircraft.

How cool is that, eh? Not many people own and fly a genuine Luftwaffe bird!!

I'd only trade it for a Spit...

I don't know Ollie, everyone is going gah gah over our new trainer.

My thoughts are a trainer/combat aircraft get even more interest. I think a Wirraway would be in more demand than a T-6, for this reason.

A really interesting combat/trainer is the Ki-36 Ida, and another although more of a utility plane and not really a trainer is the Ki-51 Sonia. I think that those get more interest.

To me, it's debateable whether the TBM actually gets more interest than a T-6 or not.

Over the years I have seen attention given to all aspects of aircraft used in military roles. I met an enthusiastic group of liaison pilots and restorers here in Texas. These guys love the liaison birds! See the article in issue number four of Warbirds Digest. They do get attention.. it is just not published as often in the "main stream" magazines.

I'm am always happy when I see the smaller warbugs covered in the magazines, they've been over-looked way too much. You'll notice a good variety that I put on the NCC AAHS website, no plane too small.

For the average audience attending a show though, the fighters/bombers will always attract more attention. The public in general is familiar with the planes they see on TV and in Movies, and those are rarely the smaller warbirds, other than a Stearman. They recognize the fighters......Roger

We must limit politicians to two terms:

I think it's prevailent from the T-6s on down. I remember year after year at Reno you never see Mike O'Leary anywhere but the unlimited pits. I think he and a lot of others think T-6s are only for taking pictures of real warbirds.

I'd agree that the smaller warbirds often get overlooked. On the weekend we had a Stinson L-5, Piper L-4 and a couple of Birddogs amoung the ranks. I personally never thought that the Birddog would be all that great to fly in but I went for a cruise in one (doing some formation work with the L-5) on Sunday and WOW! I'd be happy to have one of those in the hangar now. Don't overlook the 'warbugs' people!

I agree that the utility/trainer segment gets glossed over. Thats one of the reasons I've been focusing on the Texans for awhile as well as the C-45's and C-54s.

Personally I don't care what it is as long as it's got a radial engine, now if I could just figure out how to fit one to my Ford Focus....

Oh you could probably find a way to fit it. The hard part would be figuring out how to keep it torquing the car over onto its roof when you step on the gas!
