Thu Mar 05, 2015 6:40 pm

Harrison Ford had some issues today and made a forced landing in a Golf Course by Santa Monica Airport in his Ryan PT-22.

The plane has been heavily damaged, but Mr. Ford survived with critical injuries.

Santa Monica is a very dangerous airport to fly out of, he landed in the only open space anywhere near the airport. If you look at the airport there are houses built within 75-100 ft from the end of the runway.
The airport is built on top of a small hill that puts the runway just above the rooftops.

Glad he's ok and the plane looks salvageable.

I love how the article goes on to say how residents hate the airport and its pollution....Well they are the ones who bought the houses next to the airport its not like it appeared one day suddenly....

Listening to the tower audio a second ago, he said he had an engine failure.

From the photos the prop was stationary on impact, engine was not running.

N53178, c/n 1859, listed as an ST3KR - but the c/n seems to match PT-22 41-20650. Anyone know why it's registered that way (ST3KR instead of PT-22?)?
ETA: Was the cover plane on Vintage Aircraft for December 1998. Lots of details on its engine rebuild in the article; should be interesting to find out what went wrong.

I don't know why, but the PT-22s that I have looked up in the FAA records have all been listed that way.

What a great pilot and ambassador for aviation. Hope he has a quick recovery. Even had the sense to land at a golf course which per square foot usually contain more doctors then a hospital. They even said there were two there immediately.

He did a great job getting it on the ground right side up and surviving. Hundreds of people since WW II have been killed in stall/ spin accidents with the PT-22. It also drops like a stone when the engine isn't running. I checked out in one about 15 years ago. Great fun to fly and very balanced controls. I tried landing using less and less power and it has a terrifying sink rate, maybe 1500 to 2000 fpm, if you lost the engine and prop was windmilling.

Sad to hear.

My flight instructor and I used to fly down there a few times from Santa Barbara back in the early 90's. Tricky business to fly around LAX. Lots going on all the time. As for SMO I believe my instructor stated to put her down at that golf course if something went wrong after takeoff and there was not a way to get back to the airport. Thought I heard that anyway.

O.K.
That's funny because it's too true!

My best wishes for a speedy recovery for Mr. Ford.

The P.T. will probably take quite a bit longer.
