Anyone know what this is???

This aircraft was at the CAF Midland show last year. My father took the picture but we dont know what it is??? Anyone??? :?:

Something tells me I should know what it is, but I can't think for the life of me! :roll:

Looks like some sort of North American trainer, but I'm not entirely certain.

My first thought was some type of European trainer painted up. But everyone I ask, cant come up with anything... :Hangman:

It is a US built Snow ag-plane. Saw one at a local fly-in for sale and it had a 220hp. R-670 Continental with a wooden prop. The hopper and spray gear had been removed and the front seat and stick added. The canopy came off of something , can't remember now, either a Varga Kachina, Pt-27 Stearman, or Pt-26 Cornell. The guy was asking $18,000 for it and it was registered experimental. We kicked around the idea over beers of buying it and painting it up like a 1940, pre-war TBD Devastator, or some other now nonexistent pre-war type. It would have been a lot of fun. Observing it ,it appeared to fly okay, however they said it was underpowered as a crop duster.

Designer and builder Leland Snow. A few were powered by Fred Geschwender Ford auto conversions.

I don't think this one is a Snow....The Snow S2-A had a different gear like a Cub or a Luscombe that was mounted to the fuselage and this is mounted in the wing like a PT-19/23/26. This looks like a PT-23 with a PT-26 canopy and some kind of cowling on it. The rudder is kicked to the left, but still has the classic shape of the Fairchild instead of the Snow's shorter and square looking rudder and vertical stab. The fuselage is more tapered than the square looking fuse on the Snow. The only thing that still makes me unsure is the longerons can't be seen easily in the pic. Could it be metalized? Never seen a PT metalized on the fuse, but anything is possible. I wish there were some more pics of it.... I have saved the pics of that Snow on E-bay. Close but no cigar. We have 4 PT-19/23 airframes on the field and my vote is a heavily modified PT.... Tulio? What say you?

Doesn't appear to me to have any taper to the wing which would be incorrect for a PT-19/23/26. Maybe it's just the angle of the pic and the clipped wing which makes the wing look constant chord. Could they have stuck the Snow wing on a modified PT fuse?

The wing is what bothers me.
I don't know why anyone would clip a Fairchild P-19/23/26 wing....I can see someone re-engining a plane, and even modifying a turtledeck (I have a friend with a 450 Stearman with a raised turtledeck and a modified T-6 canopy...so it looks a like a Grumman F-3F)...but messing with a wing?

Also, note the pilots position...awfullly far back...like an AG plane.
Right now, I'll vote for it being a modified AG plane.

My guess is that it has a bit of Weatherly in it.

Looks like a clipped wing PT-23 with a metalized fuselage and a PT-26 canopy to me.

I dont think the wing is clipped. It appears to me that the bottom of the wing is reflecting the surface it's over. (shadow of wing over taxiway contrasting to unshaded part of taxiway) Just a guess.

Notice in the picture above that the wing is distorted most probably to a wide angle lens where the tip is close and the fuse is far away, not clipped.... Check out the pic here of the Fairchild M-62B built in 1940 with a Warner Super Scarab in it. http://www.aerofiles.com/fairm62b.jpg Notice the rear cockpit panel and glareshields are the same, the turnover structure is in the same place, canopys look similar, and at that angle the wing doesn't look as tapered as it really is. My money is on a modified PT-23. Tailwinds!
