FWIW, contrary to the history of this airframe both on this site and the mustangsmustangs list, this aircraft was NOT a Cavalier conversion. It was purchased surplus by Trans-Florida Aviation in 1958, then sold direct to DOMREP in 1960 without any TFA modifications.

This is one of the DOMREP aircraft which recieved "field modification" to quasi Cavalier F-51D standard in 1968 as part of Project PEACE HAWK...which meant a new engine, new fuel lines, and new instruments and avionics. It never got the gucci Cavalier military wings with more bomb racks, tip tanks, second seat, or tall tail. That stuff was reserved for factory-built aircraft like the TF-51 DOMREP got as part of PEACE HAWK (except the tip tanks).

Those photos were posted awhile ago so more progress has been made since those were taken. Might have another round of photos to go up soon. When time allows the page for Cripes will have more detailed photos added.

That P-51 almost ended up on its back in Nebraska coming back from Oshkosh one year. A friend of mine was in the backseat when, on landing it went up on its nose, stood there for a couple of seconds before coming down again right side up. He thought for sure they were going to flip over!

I take it that question was for me! The recipe is this: Rough landing strip, bounced the a/c, prop hit gravel, and nosed over.
The stories that could be told about that plane, as well as the same owner's earlier P-51D. But that would be for some hangar flying and not on an open forum!

I heard it was supposed to be painted up as a 4th Fighter Group scheme called Red Dog (and then some Roman Numerals, not sure what numbers though) Wonder if it might win an award at Oshkosh.

Yes - 44-72907, Duane Doyle in California (N334FS)

But the story is still out there that 44-74469 will be Red Dog XII, also.

Yes this airplane will be painted as an earlier mount of Louis Norley's Red Dog. This will be painted as Red Dog XI, with black theater bands on the wing and as his aircraft s/n 44-72196. Only one photo that we are aware of exist's and it's from the RH side and it shows the black bands. Not sure exactly what was on the LH side so the were taking some liberty with Red Dog XI. Some reports said it was on the nose and some not so sure.
