While on the way to Geneseo, a couple weeks back, a couple T-6s dropped in after battling weather without success-

They spent a wet night and were on their way the next morning-

A couple weeks later, today, one came back for a maint issue and this is the departure-

I just added an improvement to the L-4, a modification where the original drum brakes are replaced with Disc Brakes.
The L-4 was used as a coffee table for a while-
Image
Original setup with the drum-
Image
Original Brake unit removed. Constant problem is the loss and destruction of spring puck retainers.
They break and the pieces imbed in the pucks and score the drums. It works off of a bladder which forces the pucks outward against the drum on the wheel.
Image
Broken chunks of the retainer sitting on the brake housing-
Image
New caliper and old drum-
Image
Axel and the caliper retainer installed-
Image
Brake disc installed on the original rim. I machined off the old rivet heads and punched out the rivets to remove the original drums.
Then the new discs are positioned and holes drilled through the original rivet holes.
Image
Tire as removed-
Image
Reinstalled on the rim and valve stem in the hole-
Image
Tire retainer and retainer clip installed, clevis pin is installed (shown sitting on the tire) through a hole in both the rim and split retainer-

Clevis pin installed-

Finished product-

Conditioning the brake pads-
Image
Off to cool the brakes-

Will now easily hold 1800 rpm on runup-

Off for more flying-

At least it'll stop now.
The "original" might turn into a "pile" without the "replicas" ability to stop when needed.
Grove has made a great STCed kit for the Cub series.
It is a bolt on replacement, well, part is rivet on, that uses the original master cylinders and wheels and tires. Cleveland has replacement wheels and brakes for the Cub but you can't use the original tires size.

Rich, You are the man. Thanks for all your hard-work and knowledge applied this weekend. Dan even made the front page of the paper!

I know "Corn-Dog" appreciated your work on Sunday and the guys around the patch really have a lot of respect for your work.

Rich/Jim- Are you sure this Griffon is for the Spit or is this the first of four rebuilds your doing for the Shackelton you've bought in secret?

Ok, I'm kidding. Jeez I'd hate to start that rumor.

That's a neat conversion on the brakes.

That Harvard (ha ha couldn't resist  ) SNJ looks really good in that colour scheme and the hook. Looks a bit like a SBD! So would they have flown in that scheme or is the owner being creative?

From what I know the owner wanted to represent an SBD and use a flat paint scheme (used to be glossy).

Hi,

Regarding putting the Griffon 58 into a Spitfire, this link might prove useful:
