A lot of angles are being replaced due to corrosion that was discovered when the angles were stripped. The Eddy Current inspection is a good way to detect cracks without removing the paint, but does it reveal corosion like stripping them will?

I'm not surprised about the corrosion. On one of the
wing center sections in my posession, the attach angles
have to be seen to be believed (completely exfoliated, they've
turned into shredded wheat!). Fortunately, upon visual inspection,
my other example is very clean. I'm going to apply for an AMOC to
see if I can inspect the attach angles while they're off of the airframe
(since I'm drilling everything apart / rebuilding it from the ground-up
anyway). With the angles off, seems to me radiographic inspection
would be the way to go.

Anyway, on the corroded attach angles thing, when I think
about it, it's a half-way decent place for corrosion to live (dissimilar
metals, plus an aerodynamic fairing hiding sub-structure which
also tends to collect/harbor moisture!).

I wonder what effect this is going to have on insurance for the T-6?
I hope to be a newbie T-6 driver soon and I'll shopping for insurance soon.
Thanks for your coments.

Cheers,

Lynn

the answer is yes.. i does depend on the experience level of the operator.. with the older type eddy current machines.(needle type ED 520) a crack showes up as a good size deflection of the needle and with corrosion it is not pronounced but it showes as a constant wavering of the needle in the area of the corrosion..
