Is this the movie that shows the B-29s being guillotined at Davis Monthan at the very beginning? I thought that film was just called "Ghost Squadron", but it may be the same one...

Yes I believe it is. There was an hour version and a half hour version. I am looking for the hour version. This one was narrated by Joe Holsted, I think.

In the late 70s or early 80s they updated it and shortened it to a half hour. This version is hosted by Lowell Thomas . I have a copy of this one but I don't care for this one as much.

I saw this so much I think I can quote the first half by memory.

I would love to get my hands on a copy of that version, as well. I saw that movie as a kid, and the sight of those B-29s getting chopped up made an indelible impression on me.

When I lived in Harlingen I knew the man in charge of purchasing. He was having the filmed cleaned and then supposidly put on to video but the CAF moved before it was finished. He stayed in Harlingen and that was that.

I have asked several of the "old Colonels" and no one has it, the CAF is real guarded with that movie for some reason.

I guess I will keep checking EBay and hope for a miracle.

Maybe someday.

I have the one with Lowell Thomas. I never knew there was a longer one, but mine seems to have been spliced in places. The one I have shows a C-97 getting the blade, but no B-29s. I would really like to obtain the longer version.

The b-29s are at China Lake where they found FIFI. the scraping is of the C-97.

They took some of the footage of the original and mixed in some more current shots.

The opening 747 was originaly a 707 and there was more footage of the dog fight between the mustand and the me-109. More shots of Lefty making passes at the original Rebel Field.

The song sung by Tennesee Earnie Ford was longer.

They mixed in newer airshow footage (gunfighter,Spitfire etc...) to update it for the 80s.

There is one part in the newer one where you can hear LLowel Thomas turning the page of the script as he read it.

I just don't think it's as good and it covers less of the history of the early years.

I have a copy of the BBC version narrated by Brian Woodlridge, I am happy to let you have a DVD copy. As we are now in the same country perhaps we could meet up? If not i'll post it.

Aerojock - I have the half-hour CAF video, and Col. Culpepper's Flying Circus, but neither have a 747 or 707. The CAF film starts with head-on slow-mo of FIFI taking off, then the same with Gunfighter. Which film has the airliner? Thanks.

The BBC "World About Us - Colonel Culpepper's Flying Circus" programme starts with a very atmospheric pan along the flightline at dawn (accompanied by Pink Floyd?), the sun comes up, Fifi cranks up and then there's the head-on takeoff shot, the Atomic bomb blast and the painting of Jethro Culpepper. The programme's 48 minutes long.

Nick, the narrator is Ian Wooldridge.
