I miss seeing the Kalamazoo Hellcat at the western NY shows. Are there any Hellcat restorations to flying going on right now?

A rare beast indeed.

5 actively flying -

TFC (Duxford)
Friedkin (Chino)
CAF (Camarillo)
Pond (Palm Springs)
Lone Star (Glaveston)

Paul Allen's and Kalamazoo's are nominally airworthy, but not flown.

70185 is supposedly under restoration to airworthy at Quonset.

Kermit Weeks has an airframe stored, pending possible rebuild.

All the rest are wrecks or static museum exhibits

Regarding paint scheme, I thought the one that was long ago at the USS ALABAMA looked the best. Also, the one that used to fly out of Atlanta in the 1980s (OO) looked very good. Does anyone have pictures of these Hellcats? Thanks.

Did it ever fly since being rebuilt? Was it ever licensed? If not, I don't class it as 'airworthy'.

Now who can come up with a photo of the Moffett Field Hellcat in the base green near the Commissary as she appeared in about 1965 or anytime thereafter?

Sorry, but if I don't ask about once every year I begin again to think it was all a dream.

Thanks for the link, Mike. Unfortunately, it now has a completely different scheme than it did at Mobile. Would anyone have a picture of it at the USS ALABAMA?

Of the flyers, to me the CAF one looks the very best now.

L. Thompson - does this Hellcat from Moffett still exist, or maybe thats what you are asking also.

I have had these photos of Art since the loss and I will post these 3 photos of him prior to take-off. Hopefully they will be looked at and Art remembered for what he did in the warbird community. I had just talked with Art while he was strapping in, as he could not find some paper work and he had called to ask me where it was, and as always the paper work was on the right hand side of the panel in a clear pouch.

I sure do miss Art and the phone calls, and this Hellcat.

Kinda what I thought...I snapped this at the Offutt AFB, NE airshow in August 2005. That aircraft is VERY blue...beautiful anyways!!

LOVE that shot...reminds me of the wartime photo of the Hellcat lauching with the prop blur (you all know what I'm talking about).

RIP Art.
