Just to put this video to bed so to speak, here's the real story:
The film was taken at 1 Operational Training Unit (1OTU) Bairnsdale (Victoria) on 27 October 1942 and shows the final moments of RAAF Hudson serial A16-38 piloted by SQNLDR Frank Tampion. The aircraft had previously that year suffered combat damage to the starboard wing (close to the main spar) over New Guinea and it appears that the post-combat repair was not up to par.
Also killed in the accident were the SQNLDR's ground crew who were going along for a "jolly" - Cpl H. smith, LAC A. Thomas & AC1 N. Chesshire.
As a postscript to this accident, 1OTU (which generally operated tired aircraft returned from operational units) inspected and removed eighteen other Hudson wings following this incident.
