This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

And by today's standards, those airplanes are virtually brand new.

I know I'm gonna get in trouble for this BUT...
Have you considered Henry, that were it not for our great friends in the USA - past and present - you'd very likely be speaking in Japanese and me in German?
(And I thought an O club here was a bad idea...)

Hi, I just wanted to say that Henry made some very valid points about us "Yanks" (even us southern ones!). Alot of the time we as individuals and our elected leaders as well want to "have our cake and eat it too" when it comes to relations with other countries. Having been to Canada and Oz, I can say we all have our good points and bad (as countries). The main thing is that even though we may have disagreements, at the end of the day we are still mates (just like everybody on this board!).
Back to the main topic at hand, any new news on "Swamp Ghost" and the current state of future recovery operations in New Guinea and the surrounding area?
Cheers,
Brian
PS Truth being stranger than fiction:
One of the first songs the house band played in a club in Sydney while I was there --- "Sweet Home Alabama"... and the local crowd loved it!

Hey guys, that picture was from national geographic in the late 40s. That has been cleaned out by all the scrapees. Most of the airfield stuff which was accessable has been cleaned out.The stuff that is left is mostly japanese a/c in really bad condition on overgrown airfields. The planes that will be coming out anymore are not easily retrieved$$$$$$. The p-40s ,p-47s,p-38s that were dug up are builders and that is where the gems are. Groups are doing that now.Neat thing about those a/c is they are all combat veterans. Get your shovels guys.

as for only USA'ers having a right to them i'm all for that, on the condition that before you claim them you take back all of your unexploded ordinance left around the world over the last 60 years, clean up your nuclear testing sites in the pacific etc, take back and clean up after all your depleated uraniun projectiles sprayed everywhere your country has fought in the last 16? years.
while your at it close your military bases on foreign soil, take back your softdrinks, fast food chains, most of your music produced in the last 30+ years, all of your big budget movies, your TV shows, your drug culture, your gun culture, all the weapons given to "friends" so they could become enemies 10 years later.
don't forget your GM food and modified seeds. make your drug companies release thier grip on drugs designed to help save people. take the conditions off your aid to 3rd world countrys.
while we are on the topic feel free to take back nearly every car produced post ww2, subsidised grains etc.
oh i almost forgot your porrnn and it's surrounding culture
do this and sure most countrys in the world would be happy for you give the rights to the WW2 stuff you left littering the world (even though it was generaly signed over to the countrys where it sat).
end rant now.
henry.
What a useless pr--k!!!

I think that the only politics we need to discuss are the ones involved in the finding and removal of warbirds and artifacts from smaller countries. A good example is the politics involved with the return of Swamp Ghost.
To echo Kudzu's earlier question:

Where is the P-61 in the photo. I've stared at it for hours now...

Has anyone gone back to these islands and dug around a bit. I have read in Air Classics about the digging in the P.I. Have they found anything?

I have a photograph from an early '50s National Geographic that shows a field of B-24s on Biak in nearly intact condition with the exception of the damage to the aft fuselage that you can see in Jesse's link. The story in the magazine stated that the military simply drove a caterpillar blade into the waist area to break the backs of the a/c and moved on. As soon as I find the photo in my immense pile of stuff I'll post it.
