Planes of Fame is currently in the process of raising funds to get their B-17G flyable. You would think that if someone came by with enough $ to expidite the process, part ownership might be attainable. I don't see anyone wanting to get rid of their flyable B-17 anytime soon.

The Lackland B-17 is indeed Air Force property. A lot of fiberglass and paint have made it look great as a lawn display over the years. Might not be the most authentic looking example, but painted windows and clear-coated skin keeps this bird protected a lot better than most outdoor displays.

There are no plans, that I am aware of, to make any USAF-owned B-17 operable.
