Did anyone else catch this gem in the article?

"She (Amelia) is America's favorite missing person."

What the he||? Did Fox come out with a new reality show when we weren't looking?

I can tell you one thing, Eric, you won't find RR anywhere near TIGHAR.

Was this before or after Captain James Cook and his crew had mapped the Pacific? :?: :P

If Woods Hole took That Blowhard Gillespie and his band seriously then they would next be searching for the Chupacabra,Sasquatch,Nessie,Santa Clause,Jimmy Hoffa,The Flying Dutchman,Batboy,The B-29 on the moon and of course G.W. Bush's military records.I'll bet they find Amelia before Dubuya's records.Anybody else remember when TIGHAR was gonna change the science of aviation archaeology forever and to work on legislation to ground all warbirds so that future generations could enjoy them.No matter who spent however much moola rebuilding a pile of scrap into a beautiful machine.Yep, they saved the warbird world from it's self.Let's see, Gillespie and co. were going to tell some guy who just spent
way too many millions of dollars resurrecting a WWII fighter that he had dug up from the Greenland Icecap,"Hey,Guess what? We aint gonna let you fly that thar aeroplane cause it belongs to TIGHAR,not you and belongs in our museum and not to you!" haw, haw, haw! What a putz.

Apparently you don't know your archeology, as everyone knows thats a B-32 on the moon.

No agent86, since you ask, I don't remember any such thing or any such proposed legislation.

A quick Google search shows that the group's own September 1992 newsletter describes the Greenland P-38 recovery as "an heroic achievement and TIGHAR salutes Pat Epps, Dick Taylor, Norm Vaughn and all the team for their perseverance in the face of adversity." In fact, it goes on to state that, "TIGHAR does not for one moment suggest that those who have given so much of their time and money to have a P-38 to fly (or to sell) should be cheated out of the fulfillment of that dream. It is our fervent hope, however, that at least one of the six Lightnings that landed on the icecap in 1942 will be conserved rather than rebuilt."
--TIGHAR Tracks, Vol 8, No 4, Pg 12

Urging that certain unique or individually historic aircraft be preserved for future generations rather than exposed to the risks inherent in flying operations is not the same thing as trying to ground all warbirds and ruin everyone's good time. It is a position shared by many (though certainly not all) on this board and one that can (and should) continue to be debated and explored both rationally and passionately. Let's just see if we can leave the name-calling and sarcasm of out of it (along with Jimmy Hoffa and lunar B-32s).

Dear TBDude,
just because you dont recall what I am claiming dosnt mean it aint so my friend. It was the first time I had ever even heard of Mr.Gillespie and gang.It was an article in a major publication like Air & Space Smithsonian or similar.I'm going to somehow find a copy and post it. He also boasted that Tighar was going to become the world's leading aircraft recovery and restoration outfit. I believe that he said that they were going to be working hand in hand with the U.S Govt on these official recoveries and resurrections for eventual display in Govt. agency related museums. He made numerous other boasts and claims. I therefore ask you sir, Other than traipsing thru the forests along the east coast of the U.S. looking for Nussinger's plane (not found) and then also going to the pacific ocean island of Nikamoro a few times looking for Amelia( claimed they found her)what has Tighar acompolished in the realm of vintage aircraft recovery.NaDa! I'm sure many(if not most) of my fellow WIX bro's regularly read all available warbird mags out there and yet I still see no signs of these feats. Why ? because it was just his fantasy.
Before I became biased against them,I, like millions of other people gathered around the TV one night to see Amelias remains and the solving of the mystery. His evidence was nothing more than the following items
1. the petrified sole from a possibly female shoe.A slab of aviation aluminum they said was from the Electra(even though the rivet hole pattern fit no Electra known to man). 3.A beatup aluminium mapbox from who knows what plane.Another victory for Tighar! Hooray! The fact that they no longer demand static planes means to me that they have had to change mantra to avoid bad press and bad blood.I remember feeling the same dread that I felt when Geraldo opened" Al Capone's Vault""what a gyp.The last great feat that I remember them gearing up for was pulling Navy Sparrowhawk parasite fightersup from the sea floor or maybe it was to recover the Douglas devastator found by Doug Champlin.dreaming once again

You asked a question. I answered it.

In so doing, I fully recognized that "just because [I] don't recall what [you] are claiming doesn't mean it ain't so. That is precisely the reason why I went to the trouble to find, transcribe, and cite the proper sources -- to demonstrate that my perception represents no trick of my faulty memory or a recent change of mantra, but rather the well documented and very public position of the organization at the time of the Greenland Lightning recovery almost 15 years ago.

You claim that "an article in a major publication like Air & Space Smithsonian or similar" will illustrate that the complete contrary position is actually the case. If you can indeed somehow find a copy of that article (or any article) in which TIGHAR directly asserts ownership of "Glacier Girl," advocates the wholesale grounding of all flying warbird aircraft, and/or calls for legislation to that effect, then by all means please do post it here. I'll be very interested (surprised and amazed, but definitely interested) to read it.

The request to provide more substantial support for one's implications is not only reasonable, but represents the kind of high standards an open forum like this should strive for. After all, to paraphrase some very good advice -- just because you claim something, doesn't make it so.
