G_ddammit.

This is just gut-wrenching... especially after the Camarillo crash.
My thoughts are with the family of the deceased... can't think of any other words right now...

Terrible day. I was at the show.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the pilot who was killed.

The family and I were on the flightline and witnessed the tail end of the crash as one of the birds skidded nose first. Here are some far away shots of one of the P-51's with it's tail in the air. The other one which I guess was fatal according to the previous comments appears to have flipped over on it's back. You can't see it in the pic because of all the emergency vehicles. Needless to say they didn't go on with the airshow.
The aircraft had just finished flying a mock Reno air race and were both apparently trying to land when it happened.

Without going into detail yet, after watching the video link Chuck Gardner posted, you could easily come away with some false assumptions from the media account. The pilot of the airplane that was one it's back was the fatality, not the one you could read the tail # on. He was injured, but exited the aircraft himself.
Until the media identifies the pilot, I see no reason to post it here. Suffice to say that the "father and son team" were not the one killed.

I am very sad to say that the pilot lost was a well-known P-51 restorer and owner who loved what he did. Dan K. and I spoke with him just yesterday. He was a fine chap and will be missed by many who share our passion. I feel fortunate to have met him.
May he rest in peace with so many other heroes...
